The Beatitudes at the back of the statue summarize a belief in a religion I’ve been brought up and chosen to continue to believe in. Art and language are some of the channels of expression that I have been given to make sense of life. These platforms become layers forming a bridge between the secular and the ‘religious’ — because Catholic, or katholikos, means universal.
Clara Wanatirta is currently studying as an international student at the University of Melbourne where she is completing her undergraduate degree in Creative Arts. Aspiring to have a lifelong career in the Arts, Wanatirta recently held her first solo exhibition in April 2008 at the Union House of the University of Melbourne. Wanatirta has worked across a number of media, taking particular interest in photography, textiles and bookmaking.
